The easiest and most cost effective method to freshen up and revitalize any space be it your home, office or garage is a paint job. With the proper tools, painting is easy and can easily done by anyone. Perhaps the most difficult task of the entire process is picking a color scheme, deciding where to paint and how much to use. Here are a few of our favourite tips.
For color matching, try a color wheel or get samples from your local paint store. Most professional painting companies will use color wheels to determine what colors pair well together. The way the color wheel works is colors that are next to each other on the wheel, like red and orange, work well together. “Complimentary” colors, colors like blue and orange, are opposite on the color wheel and will also pair well together.
Next up is determining where and how to paint, we recommend the 60-30-10 rule. Essentially, you use a dominant color for 60 percent of the room, a recessive one for 30, and an accent for 10. While planning the color scheme for a whole house, you can use the same three colors but change which is dominant or accent in different rooms.
For smaller projects like an office or entertainment room, consider using a favorite accent color on a concentrated area, like the inner surface of a built-in nook or shelf. Color expert, Mark Geld at Atlas Painting and Restorations in Vancouver, suggests painting one surface or an interesting architectural detail such as the fireplace or crown molding is a great way to get some bold punch and expression into the space.
